Living in Westfield

Westfield at a glance

The town's own site describes Victorian and Colonial-style homes on broad, tree-lined streets. Its February 2025 Historic Preservation Map shows one historic district designated by ordinance, the Kimball Avenue District (houses on Kimball and Lawrence Avenues), plus individually designated landmark homes on streets including West Dudley Avenue and Stoneleigh Park. Stoneleigh Park was planned around 1904 by H.B. Tremaine, president of the Aeolian Company, and his cousin C.M. Tremaine. It has about thirty single-family houses on roughly twenty acres of park-like grounds, and its ten earliest houses are two-story variations of the Colonial Revival style.

Getting around

Bus: NJ Transit route 113 (Dunellen–New York) stops at the Westfield train station on North Ave at Elm St and runs to the Port Authority Bus Terminal on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Route 59 (Plainfield–Newark) is a local bus through town. Routes 114 and 117 run to New York along U.S. Route 22, just north of town. Roads: Route 28 runs about two miles through town beside the railroad. The Garden State Parkway is reached at Exits 135 and 137.
