History

Linden was formed as a township on March 4, 1861, from parts of Elizabeth, Rahway and Union Township, and became a city on January 1, 1925. During World War II, General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division built FM-1 and FM-2 Wildcat fighters for the U.S. Navy at its Linden Assembly plant. Linden Airport was built next door in 1942 so the aircraft could be test-flown and delivered.
