Living in Scotch Plains

Scotch Plains at a glance

The township's history page says the town grew after World War I "mostly in homes for commuters." It says the biggest growth came in the 1950s and 1960s, when large housing developments replaced farmland, especially on the south side. Newer downtown housing includes Scotch Plains Crossing at 1776 E. Second Street, a three-story building with 40 rental apartments and retail space that opened with a ribbon cutting on April 8, 2026. A larger downtown redevelopment of township-owned land along Park, Bartle and Westfield Avenues, with Woodmont Properties as redeveloper, was presented to the public on May 18, 2026 and was still waiting on NJDEP permits.

Getting around

Rail: NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line (formerly the Central Railroad of New Jersey main line) runs through the township. There is no station in Scotch Plains; the nearest is Fanwood Station on S. Martine Ave. between North and South Aves. in Fanwood. The railroad's original 1837 stop, about a quarter mile north on the old right-of-way, was called Scotch Plains station. The present Fanwood station building dates from 1874. NJ Transit's weekday Raritan Valley timetable (as of 8/30/26) marks some trains as a one-seat ride to New York Penn Station with no transfer. The other trains require a change at Newark Penn Station for New York. Bus: NJ Transit timetables issued 7/1/26 show Scotch Plains stops on route 112 (Clark–New York; some trips, at the Union County Technical School campus), route 113 (Dunellen–New York), route 114 (Bridgewater–New York) and route 117 (Somerville–New York Express, at US-22 and Union Ave.). All four go to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Route 59 (Plainfield–Newark, stop at Westfield Ave. and Park Ave.) and route 65 (Newark–Somerville, stop at Park Ave. and Mountain Ave.) go to Newark. Roads: U.S. Route 22 crosses the north of the township and NJ Route 28 crosses a short central stretch. I-78 can be reached in Watchung and Berkeley Heights, the Garden State Parkway in Clark and I-287 in Edison.
