Living in Cranford

Cranford at a glance

The township says its neighborhoods include historic homes along the Rahway River, some dating to the late 1800s, and reports several transit-oriented development projects downtown. Local news coverage in 2013 described the Riverfront redevelopment on South Avenue as bringing housing and restaurants into downtown.

Getting around

Cranford station, on South Avenue East, is on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line. By road, the Garden State Parkway runs along the township's eastern edge (interchanges 136 and 137), and Route 28 (North Avenue) crosses the center of town east to west.

History

The New Jersey Legislature incorporated Cranford as a township on March 14, 1871, from parts of Clark, Linden, Springfield, Union and Westfield townships. The name is said to come from the Crane family: in 1720, John Crane built mills at a ford on the Rahway River. Because the river runs through town, Cranford is informally called "The Venice of New Jersey."
