Living in Mountainside

Mountainside at a glance

Union County's municipal profile (2019, using 2013–2017 Census data) describes Mountainside as having a "strong suburban residential character." By that profile, nearly all homes are single-family detached houses, most are owner-occupied, and more than half were built before 1960.

Getting around

Mountainside has no train station of its own. The borough names Summit Station and Westfield Station as its two closest stations. NJ Transit lists Summit on the Morris & Essex Lines, where the Morristown Line and the Gladstone Branch meet, and Westfield on the Raritan Valley Line. Union County's profile also names Garwood (Raritan Valley) and New Providence (Gladstone Branch). A 2016 NJ Transit press release says MidTOWN DIRECT gives either a one-seat ride into Manhattan or a transfer at Summit or Newark Broad Street. For buses, the borough lists NJ Transit routes 114 and 117 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, with 114 express trips at commuting hours, from a stop on Route 22 in front of Borough Hall. U.S. Route 22 runs through the borough, and I-78 runs along its northern edge, where it briefly forms the Summit–Mountainside border.

Landmarks & parks

Watchung Reservation (Union County park that extends into Mountainside, Summit, Berkeley Heights, Scotch Plains and Springfield); Trailside Nature & Science Center (Union County's environmental education center, at Coles Avenue and New Providence Road in the Watchung Reservation; dates to 1941, renovated 2006); Lake Surprise (Watchung Reservation, on the border of Berkeley Heights and Mountainside); Echo Lake Park (Union County park with parts in both Mountainside and Westfield; two lakes, boating, skating and fishing, a dog park, and the county's September 11 memorial); Watchung Riding Stable / Watchung Stables (county stables on Summit Lane, Mountainside); Deacon Andrew Hetfield House (dates to the 1760s; on the National Register of Historic Places since July 27, 1989; museum and meeting place at Constitution Plaza); Levi Cory House (built c. 1818; moved to Constitution Plaza in 2013; The Village Shop on the ground floor and a children's museum upstairs); Mountainside Public Library (1 Constitution Plaza); Children's Specialized Hospital Long Term Care Center – Mountainside (150 New Providence Road; RWJBarnabas Health); Mountainside Community Pool (borough facility); Fitness Trail behind Borough Hall (0.9-mile trail with accessible fitness stations).

Schools

The Mountainside School District runs a preschool program, Beechwood School (the district site lists grades K-2) and Deerfield School (grades 3-8). Students in grades 9-12 attend Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights under a sending/receiving relationship, and Union County Vocational-Technical Schools is another option. The only private school confirmed as operating in the borough is The Bancroft School, Mountainside (formerly Kohler Academy), a special-education school at 1137 Globe Avenue that serves preschool through high school.

History

Mountainside was incorporated as a borough on September 25, 1895, from portions of Westfield Township. In the late 1950s the U.S. Army placed the missile launchers of Nike battery NY-73 in Mountainside, with the radar in Berkeley Heights. The site ran until 1963, and the area cleared for it in the Watchung Reservation is now the Watchung Stables.
