Roselle at a glance

Union County's 2019 borough profile describes an older housing stock, with most homes built before 1960. Just over half are single-family detached houses, and most of the rest are two-family houses or buildings with three or more units. Newer rentals include PARK, a phased apartment community planned for 932 units on the former Roselle Golf Club at 417 Raritan Road. Its first phase of 190 units opened in September 2017, and the county profile says the plan keeps about 40% of the property as open space.

Getting around

Roselle has no rail station of its own. Its old Central Railroad of New Jersey stop, Roselle–Roselle Park, closed in 1978. The nearest station is Roselle Park on NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line, at West Lincoln Avenue and Donald Place in neighboring Roselle Park. On that station's page, NJ Transit lists Linden (3 miles away) and Rahway (4 miles away) as nearby stations. Linden is served by the Northeast Corridor Line and the North Jersey Coast Line. For buses, NJ Transit lists route 112 to the Port Authority Bus Terminal "at Roselle" and route 94. Union County's 2019 profile also lists routes 56, 59 and 115. Route 27 forms the southeastern border with Linden, and Route 28 runs just to the north through Roselle Park. Newark Liberty International Airport is about 6 miles away.

Landmarks & parks

Warinanco Park: a 205-acre Union County park in Roselle, on its border with Elizabeth and Linden. The Olmsted Brothers completed its design plans in 1923. It has Warinanco Park Lake, a 400-meter athletic track, the Warinanco Ice Rink in the sports center, the Caxton Brown Memorial Azalea Garden and the Henry S. Chatfield Memorial Garden.; Edison electric-light site at the northeast corner of Locust Street and West First Avenue, where the 1883 generator stood. A time capsule and a bronze-and-granite marker were placed there in 1983.; First Presbyterian Church, at West Fifth Avenue and Chestnut Street. Its thirty-bulb 1883 'electrolier' was damaged by fire in 1949, then salvaged, restored and re-hung in the church.; Chestnut Street (200 block / 210 Chestnut Street): the site of borough events such as R&B Thursday Nights (Thursdays through October 8, 2026) and the Multicultural Festival; Roselle Memorial Library, 104 West Fourth Avenue; Bud Simmons "Pine" Park; Sylvester Land Memorial Field.

Schools

Roselle Public Schools serves PreK–12. Kindergarten Success Academy (K) feeds Harrison Elementary, Dr. Charles C. Polk and Washington Elementary schools (grades 1–4), then Leonard V. Moore Middle School (5–6), Grace Wilday Junior High School (7–8) and Abraham Clark High School (9–12). Private options in town are Roselle Catholic High School (9–12) at 350 Raritan Road, founded in 1959 in the Archdiocese of Newark with a Marist Brothers tradition and coed since 1983, and St. Joseph the Carpenter School (PreK–8, Catholic) at 140 East Third Avenue.

History

On January 19, 1883, a generator at Locust Street and West First Avenue started what is generally described as the world's first electric lighting system using overhead wires. Thomas Edison built it to show that a whole community could be lit by electricity. It powered a store, the railroad station, about forty houses and 150 street lights. That April, the First Presbyterian Church was lit by electricity as well, and the borough's website still carries the tagline "First In Light."
