Edison, NJ Homes for Sale

Edison is a township in Middlesex County. It borders East Brunswick, Highland Park, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Sayreville, South Plainfield and Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County, and Clark, Plainfield and Scotch Plains in Union County. It completely surrounds the separate borough of Metuchen, making the pair one of New Jersey's 'doughnut towns'. The land is mostly flat, with hillier ground along the Perth Amboy Moraine, and drops to sea level at the Raritan River.

Getting around

Rail: NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor Line stops at Edison station, at Plainfield and Central Avenues, half a mile west of Route 27 and east of Kilmer Road. The station is generally described as lying in the Stelton section of South Edison. NJ Transit marks the station as accessible and lists three lots with 797 standard spaces (182, 138 and 477) and 20 accessible spaces. Residents of North Edison may be closer to two other Northeast Corridor stations just outside town: Metropark (100 Middlesex Tpk., Iselin, off Garden State Parkway exit 131A, one block east of Route 27) and Metuchen (Main St. and Woodbridge Ave., Metuchen, also marked accessible). Northeast Corridor trains from Edison run north to Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station, and south to Trenton. Buses: NJ Transit route 48 to Elizabeth and local routes 801, 804, 805, 810, 813, 814 and 819 are listed as serving the township. Highways: about 5 miles of the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), with Exit 10 in Edison; the southern end of I-287, where it meets the Turnpike; U.S. Route 1; and state Routes 27 and 440. The Garden State Parkway runs through neighboring Woodbridge Township rather than Edison.

History

Thomas Edison opened his industrial research laboratory, which he called his 'invention factory', at Menlo Park in 1876. The phonograph and a commercially viable incandescent light bulb were developed there. The township says Christie Street, where the Edison Memorial Tower now stands, was the first street lit by incandescent lamps. The town was incorporated as Raritan Township on March 17, 1870, from parts of Piscataway and Woodbridge, and took Edison's name on November 10, 1954. A proposal on the same ballot to rename it 'Nixon' failed.
