After the Civil War, Summit became a summer resort where very wealthy families built large summer estates (City of Summit); in the late 19th century the area shifted from farmland to estates. After World War II, a building boom is credited with giving Summit the suburban character it is known for today: tree-lined streets and architect-designed houses.

Lakeland Bus Lines Route 78 (Bernardsville to the Port Authority Bus Terminal) lists Summit stops, including the Summit Park & Ride and Broad St. at Maple St. by the station. Summit's original name was 'Turkey Hill.' Revolutionary War signal beacon No. 10 stood on a Summit hilltop, now marked by the 'Old Sow' cannon and signal-beacon plaque at 226 Hobart Avenue near Beacon Road. Early on June 6, 1780, the cannon and beacon fire warned local militia and Washington's troops at Jockey Hollow that British and Hessian forces were invading New Jersey.
