Living in Metuchen

Metuchen at a glance

The Middlesex Avenue–Woodwild Park Historic District covers 89 acres along Middlesex Avenue and nearby streets, including Oak, Linden, E. Chestnut, Maple, Elm, Highland and Hillside Avenues. Its buildings include Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Gothic, Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival, Mission and Bungalow/Craftsman styles. Its most important buildings date from about 1807 (the Old Franklin Schoolhouse) to about 1910 (the Colonial Revival Corbin House). By 1900, commuting was already a way of life here. U.S. Route 1, built just south of the borough in 1930, is credited with drawing traffic away from Middlesex Avenue and helping the borough keep its residential character.

History

Metuchen was incorporated as a borough on March 20, 1900, from parts of Raritan Township (now Edison). The name comes from a Native American chief whose name was spelled Matouchin or Matochshegan, and it first appears in records in 1688/1689. The artists, writers and intellectuals who settled here in the late 1800s earned it the nickname "the Brainy Boro" (or "Brainy Borough"). One of its two post offices is still called Brainy Boro Station.
