Getting around

Carteret has no NJ Transit rail station. The borough's ferry plans name two nearby rail stations: Rahway station in the City of Rahway (Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Coast Line) and Woodbridge station in Woodbridge Township (North Jersey Coast Line). Both lines run to New York Penn Station. NJ Transit bus routes 116 (to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan) and 48 (Elizabeth to Perth Amboy, via Roosevelt Avenue in Carteret) serve the borough. The New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) is the only major road through Carteret, and Interchange 12 is inside the borough. The Carteret Intermodal Ferry Terminal is under construction beside Waterfront Park and Veteran's Pier. It will have four ferry slips, and the borough says it is expected to open by early 2028 or sooner, with two to three stops planned in Manhattan. NJ Transit received a $9.6 million federal grant to build an electric ferry boat for the service.

History

Carteret was formed from parts of Woodbridge Township on April 11, 1906 as the borough of Roosevelt, and it took the name Carteret on November 7, 1922. The name honors Sir George Carteret, one of the first proprietors of the Province of New Jersey, and Philip Carteret, the colony's first governor (1665-1673). The Chrome neighborhood is named for the many steel plants in the area, including the Chrome Steel company.
