Living in Elizabeth

Elizabeth at a glance

Elizabeth's neighborhoods are generally described as offering a varied housing stock. Bayway has older two- to four-family houses and apartment complexes. Elmora has several high-rise complexes within reach of Elizabeth station. The Elizabethport waterfront has newer town homes and two-family houses. The North End has larger one- and two-family homes plus apartment houses and condos around North Avenue, Quality Hill is being redeveloped with new condominiums, and Westminster is known for large Tudor-style residences.

Getting around

Rail: Elizabeth has two NJ Transit stations, Elizabeth (Midtown, 11 West Grand Street) and North Elizabeth (1180 North Avenue). Both are served by the Northeast Corridor Line and the North Jersey Coast Line. NJ Transit's current timetables (Northeast Corridor as of 8/30/26, North Jersey Coast Line as of 5/31/26) show trains from both stations running through to New York, via Newark Liberty International Airport station, Newark Penn Station and Secaucus Junction. On both lines, Elizabeth is two stops north of Rahway, with Linden in between. Not every train stops at Elizabeth, and the weekend Northeast Corridor timetable shows fewer trains stopping at North Elizabeth than at Elizabeth. NJ Transit reopened Elizabeth station's rebuilt eastbound platform and station house on September 12, 2023. Buses: four NJ Transit routes run to Manhattan's Port Authority Bus Terminal: 111 (New York–IKEA–Jersey Gardens), 112 (Clark–New York), 113 (Dunellen–New York) and 115 (Rahway–New York). Local routes include 62 (Newark–Elizabeth, via Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark Penn Station) and 48 (Elizabeth–Woodbridge–Perth Amboy, which also serves Rahway). Highways: New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), I-278 over the Goethals Bridge to Staten Island, U.S. Route 1&9, and NJ Routes 27, 28, 81 and 439.
