In Rahway, the Rahway River receives two tributaries, Robinson's Branch and the South Branch. The river's mouth is at the Arthur Kill, between Carteret and Linden (Rahway River, Wikipedia).
Getting around: trains and roads
For many buyers, the train is the headline. Rahway was designated a New Jersey Transit Village in 2002.
Two NJ Transit lines from one downtown station
NJ Transit's Rahway station serves the Northeast Corridor and the North Jersey Coast Line.
| Line | Where it runs | Selected stations |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast Corridor | Between New York Penn Station and Trenton Transit Center | Newark Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, Newark Liberty International Airport station, Metropark, New Brunswick, Princeton Junction |
| North Jersey Coast Line | Runs from Rahway to Bay Head; most trains run between New York Penn Station and Long Branch, with diesel shuttles between Long Branch and Bay Head | Red Bank, Asbury Park, Belmar, Spring Lake, Manasquan, Point Pleasant Beach |
Sources: Northeast Corridor Line, North Jersey Coast Line and Rahway station (Wikipedia). The two lines split just southwest of Rahway station, so one station has trains on both lines: toward New York Penn Station and toward the Jersey Shore. For shore stations south of Long Branch, many trips mean changing to the shuttle at Long Branch.

The arts, dining and downtown events
The Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with two venues. Its historic Main Stage, at 1601 Irving Street in the former Rahway Theatre, was built in 1928 and is listed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places; its modern Hamilton Stage, at 360 Hamilton Street, was completed in 2012. The City of Rahway describes the Main Stage as "a beautifully-restored 1300-seat Golden Age theater."
The theatre was designed by architect David M. Oltarsh, was added to the National Register on August 13, 1986, and still has its original Wurlitzer pipe organ, working and fully restored (UCPAC, Wikipedia).
The city's Visit Rahway page describes the Rahway Arts District as a place for artists to socialize, show their work and expand their knowledge, and says local restaurants offer cuisines including American, Chinese, Cuban, Irish, Italian, Latin Fusion, Mexican, Peruvian, Portuguese and Soul Food.
The mission of the Rahway Special Improvement District (SID) is to promote the economic well-being of Rahway businesses and maintain a strong partnership between the arts and business communities. In March 2025, the SID's management moved to an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit. A short history
The Rahway area was once home to the Lenape, and tradition holds that the city is named after Rahwack (or Ra-wa-rah), a local tribal chief. Spanktown was the area's original name, and the Battle of Spanktown was fought there in January 1777 during the Revolutionary War. Rahway was incorporated as a city by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 19, 1858 (Wikipedia).
Its industrial past includes Merck & Co. (established in Rahway in 1903), Wheatena and the Regina Music Box Company, and in the 1880s Nikola Tesla opened Tesla Electric Light & Manufacturing in Rahway. The former Regina factory at 54 Cherry Street has since been converted into the Heritage Square condominiums.
Merck & Co. is headquartered in Rahway; per Wikipedia, the company announced in 2021 that it would return its global headquarters to its Rahway research campus and completed the move in 2024.
The Merchants and Drovers Tavern at 1632 St. Georges Avenue is now a museum looked after by the Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum Association. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since November 21, 1978, and analysis of its wooden frame points to two periods of construction: 1795–1796 and 1818–1819.
