Schools

Township of Union Public Schools (TUPS) serves PreK through grade 12. The district describes its elementary schools as kindergarten through grade 4 and names Battle Hill, Connecticut Farms, Hannah Caldwell, Livingston and Washington. Jefferson Elementary is its one grade-5 school. Burnet and Kawameeh Middle Schools cover grades 6-8, and Union High School covers grades 9-12. The TUPS PreK Center is at the Franklin school site, 1550 Lindy Terrace, and TUPS says preschool places for 2026-2027 are assigned by lottery. Kean University's main campus is in the township.

History

The area was settled in 1667 as Connecticut Farms. On June 7, 1780, during the Battle of Connecticut Farms, a shot fired through a bedroom window of the parsonage killed Hannah Caldwell, wife of Rev. James Caldwell. British forces then burned the parsonage and the Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church. An artist's version of her death appears on the official seal of Union County. The Township of Union was incorporated on November 23, 1808, from parts of Elizabeth Township, and became part of the new Union County in 1857.
