Living in Hudson County, NJ puts you in New Jersey's geographically smallest county, with the Hudson River on its eastern edge and PATH trains, ferries and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels crossing to Manhattan. Jersey City is the county seat and its largest city by both population and area. For buyers, three things stand out: transit options, a waterfront walkway, and housing that ranges from historic row houses and brownstones to high-rise towers.
I'm Angela Becerra, and I help buyers across Hudson, Bergen, Essex, Union and Middlesex counties. Here is a factual overview, with every detail linked to its source.
Living in Hudson County, NJ: where it is and what it's like
Water defines most of the county's edges. According to Wikipedia's county profile, it is bordered by the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay to the east, the Kill Van Kull to the south, and Newark Bay and the Hackensack or Passaic River to the west. Its only land border is with Bergen County to the north.
The Palisades in the north have cliffs above the Hudson, and the land levels off toward a flat, coastal southern peninsula. The western area is part of the New Jersey Meadowlands. Of the county's 62.35 square miles, 46.19 are land and 16.15 are water, per U.S. Census Bureau 2020 figures cited on Wikipedia.
The county was created in 1840 from part of Bergen County plus some Essex County lands, and is named for Henry Hudson. Wikipedia's Jersey City entry describes the area, settled by the Dutch as Pavonia and later established as Bergen, as the first permanent settlement in what became New Jersey. Ellis Island and Liberty Island lie entirely within Hudson County's waters, although Liberty Island is part of New York.
Getting around: commuting to New York
Each way of crossing the Hudson serves different stations, so the right home often depends on which line you'll use.

PATH is a 13.8-mile, 13-station system run by a wholly owned Port Authority subsidiary; four routes run daily and two run late at night. Check the Port Authority's PATH page for current schedules and service changes. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, owned by NJ Transit, began service in April 2000 and, despite its name, does not serve Bergen County. In a 2006 release, NJ Transit described the system as a link between waterfront destinations, NJ Transit rail and bus routes, PATH trains and trans-Hudson ferries.
Hoboken Terminal, a Beaux-Arts station built in 1907, brings PATH, NJ Transit rail, buses, light rail and NY Waterway together. Secaucus Junction, opened in December 2003, sits five miles west of New York Penn Station.
For drivers, the Holland Tunnel (1927) links Jersey City with Lower Manhattan, and the Lincoln Tunnel, whose first tube opened in 1937, links Weehawken with Midtown. The Bayonne Bridge to Staten Island opened raised roadways, with a separate pedestrian and bicycle path, in May 2019. I don't quote commute times, because they vary by address, line and hour.
Parks, waterfront and culture
Liberty State Park is a 1,212-acre state park on Upper New York Bay, opposite Liberty and Ellis islands. It holds the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, Liberty Science Center and Empty Sky, New Jersey's official 9/11 memorial. The National Park Service says ferries to Liberty and Ellis islands depart from two locations: The Battery in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in Jersey City.
The county's Parks Department says its system covers over 600 acres, and it lists nine county parks. A few highlights:
- Lincoln Park, Jersey City: the oldest and largest county park, with about 150 acres east and 123 acres west along the Hackensack River, where Edgewood Lake is open for fishing.
- James J. Braddock Park: 167 acres atop the Palisades, with the 16-acre Woodcliff Lake and views of the Manhattan skyline.
- Stephen R. Gregg Park, Bayonne: nearly 100 acres on the east bank of Newark Bay, with a half-mile waterfront promenade.
- Laurel Hill Park, Secaucus: the most recently established county park, in Hudson County's portion of the Meadowlands, with water access to the Hackensack River.
Along the river, the Hudson River Waterfront Conservancy describes the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway as 18.5 linear miles, planned by the state as a continuous path from the southern tip of Bayonne to the George Washington Bridge, with free public access 24/7, though it notes that at least one access gate now keeps limited hours. In Hoboken, Pier A Park at 100 Sinatra Drive holds the Hoboken 9/11 Memorial.
The Hamilton–Burr duel took place in Weehawken in 1804, and Wikipedia notes the first officially recorded baseball game at Hoboken's Elysian Fields in 1846.

Hudson County NJ real estate: housing and towns
The county's official website lists 12 municipalities: Bayonne, East Newark, Hoboken, Harrison, Jersey City, Union City, Kearny, Weehawken, West New York, North Bergen, Secaucus and Guttenberg. The housing stock reflects their history:
- Jersey City: from the 1980s, brownstones were restored in Paulus Hook, Van Vorst Park, Hamilton Park, Harsimus Cove and Bergen Hill, and many high-rises were built, including the mixed-use Newport community.
- Hoboken: in the 19th century the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company laid out a regular street grid and built housing that was generally masonry row houses of three to five stories; the grid and some of those row houses survive.
- Weehawken: set on the Palisades, crossed by Boulevard East, with views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline, and the New Jersey end of the Lincoln Tunnel.
- Bayonne: on the Bergen Neck peninsula between Newark Bay, the Kill Van Kull and New York Bay; Cape Liberty Cruise Port opened there in 2004.
- Secaucus: within the Meadowlands and home to Secaucus Junction.
Just north, across the Bergen County line, the walkway continues into Edgewater and Fort Lee. Comparing both sides? See my notes on Edgewater.
Buying in Hudson County: what to know
- Start with your line. PATH, light rail, NJ Transit and ferries serve different stops; map the nearest one first.
- Test the trip at the hour you would actually travel.
- Know the building type. A condo in a tower and a brownstone or row house involve different documents, fees and inspections.
- Check timing if a student is changing schools. HCST applicants and a parent or guardian must be full-time Hudson County residents, and the 2027–28 student application is due 13 November 2026. Confirm how residency is documented directly with HCST.
- Get your financing in order early. Our financing guide and first-time buyer resources are good places to start.
